The planned part-privatisation of some state assets is being slammed by opposition parties.

Sinn Fein is accusing the government of “flogging off the state’s wealth for a quick buck”.

The United Left Alliance says the decision will come at the cost of jobs and democratic control over vital services and infrastructure.

The Fianna Fail leader Michael Martin is again insisting the sale of assets is solely a policy being pursued by the current government.

“There was mention of 2 billion or 5 billion or the sale of State assets in the original memorandum of understanding” he said.

“That was something that you…decided to put in in line with your own policies – the Fine Gael policies in particular”.

“I think it’s wrong to continue to mislead people in relation to what is a fact” he added.

Over 6,000 others were injured when the 6.3 magnitude quake struck the city.

Many of the survivors attended the 2-minute silence and memorial service at Hagley Park in the city.

More than 10,000 people stood in silence while police officers and firefighters read out the full list of victims.

That was followed by two minutes of silence.

The earthquake destroyed thousands of homes and other buildings causing billions of dollars in damage.

Meanwhile the slow pace of recovery is drawing criticism from residents and developers.

The Governor General Sir Jerry Mateparae says Christchurch was a ‘treasure’ of the country’s natural and man-made environment.

“It was therefore with rising horror, that my wife and I watched the unfolding scenes of devastation that so disfigured this beautiful city” he said.

Overcrowding in Pediatric emergency departments is at a historically high and dangerous level according to the Irish Association of Emergency Medicine.

The numbers of children waiting on trolleys for admission to hospital has increased by 700 percent in 3 years.

Children frequently spend more than 12 hours on a trolley and in some cases this can be over 24 hours.

Professor Ronan O Sullivan is consultant at Our Lady’s Hospital in Crumlin.

He says adult overcrowding can overshadow the picture in our pediatric hospitals.

“That’s a misperception that we’re trying to…correct – the stark reality of adult emergency department overcrowding which has been with us for several years is now starting in pediatric emergency departments” he said.

“I think the key message is that we need to make sure that we don’t tolerate the problem as it exists in emergency departments in adult hospitals” he added.

Barry O’Leary says the IDA is currently vying for up to eight major projects that could deliver a significant number of jobs.

And he says he believes the targets set out under the government jobs plan can be met including the own target from the IDA of 13,000.

“I think it can; if you look at it we have our particular part to play in it – the 13,000 jobs – again, you have the multiplier effect” he said.

“Clearly it’s going to be challenging because the global economic environment is still uncertain; but it is important we remain very, very focused” he added.

The Editor of The Sunday Times – John Whiterow – went on to say the veteran reporter was a woman ‘full of humour and mischief’.

Ms Colvin died alongside a French photographer in an attack which is said to have targeted an opposition safehouse.

Sky’s Foreign Affairs Correspondent Lisa Holland worked alongside Marie Colvin for years.

The local community of Bagenalstown in Co. Carlow is coming to terms with a double tragedy today after the deaths of two brothers in-law on two farms overnight.

The body of the first man who was in his 70s was discovered by fire crew attending a blaze on a large farm in Ballycormack at around 4am.

It is believed he died from gunshot wounds.

The body of the second man was found in the adjoining farm at around 9am.

He was in his 60s.

Gardai are examining the possibility that the two men may have been involved in a family dispute.

They have sealed off the area.

Fr. Paddy Byrne is the local Curate in Bagnalstown parish.

“There’s a sense of disbelief and indeed a real sense of numbness when it comes to a rural community such as here in Bagenalstown in Co. Carlow – where people know one another and care for one another, and indeed value each other” he said.

“It makes the tragedy felt all the greater – but it is tragic and a tragic day”.

“And it’s a day that certainly has changed the lives in a very devastating manner for very good people” he added.

The Agriculture Minister says the government will have to think very seriously about any changes to sick pay as it could be damaging to business.

The Social Protection Minister Joan Burton wants to share the cost of illness benefit between businesses and the State as opposed to the current system where the taxpayer bears the whole cost.

The idea was mooted before the last budget – but was put on the back burner.

Minister Simon Coveney says many businesses would struggle to pay any sick pay bill.

“Before we would agree to make any changes in this area, we’d want to think about it very carefully in terms of its impact on employment” he said.

“That is why it wasn’t introduced in the last budget – even though some people were strongly arguing for it, including Joan Burton”.

“But that’s the way government makes decisions” he added.

The New Zealand city of Christchurch has remembered the 185 people killed during an earthquake exactly a year ago.
