The government is also set to provide an update on wearing face coverings in public.

The cabinet is meeting this morning to discuss the advice of the National Public Health Emergency Team, and is set to give the go-ahead for the first phase of easing coronavirus restrictions.

That would mean from Monday, people could meet up outdoors in groups of four, while maintaining the two metre distance, and play sports like tennis and golf.

While Garden centres, repair shops and some construction sites would also be given the green light to re-open.

The government is also set to provide updated guidance on the wearing of face coverings.

Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe said there are encouraging signs the country could start to re-open next week.

''There are some indicators available to us that the efforts of our Country have been working'', he said.

''We're hopeful that we can translate that into implementing the road map that was published a few weeks ago''.
