An infectious disease specialist is warning we can't relax about Covid-19 after 40 new cases were reported yesterday.
Three-quarters of the cases confirmed in the Republic involved people under the age of 45, with the median age being 33.
It was the highest number of cases in six weeks, bringing the total number to 25,929.
But no new deaths were recorded, meaning the death toll remains at 1,764.
Professor Sam McConkey from the Royal College of Surgeons says the danger is, these young people could pass it on to the older generation.
''This is again very similar to what we had in February and March, before we had large numbers of elderly people getting it who sadly passed away from it'', he said.
''This is a grumbling of a virus among young healthy people who are often minimally symptomatic, which the risk is then they inevitably meet with their parents and grandparents and older people.
''And then in two or four weeks time it all goes wild in older people again''.
Dr Mike Ryan, from the World Health Organisation, says many countries have a spike in cases when restrictions are lifted.
''I think what is clear is that countries that have implemented control measures have suppressed the virus'', he said.
''And when those measures are lifted, the virus returns.
''In every single country where pressure has been lifted on the virus, where virus is still at community level there's been a jump back in cases''.
