Candidates to be the next British Prime Minister are pitching their ideas on Brexit.
UK Conservative leadership contender, Jeremy Hunt, says EU politicians would be prepared to look at a Brexit deal that does not involve a backstop.
Speaking on the BBC’s Andrew Marr, Jeremy Hunt says both Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron have indicated privately the backstop issue could be revisited.
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said there can be no withdrawal deal without a resolution on the Irish border issue.
Jeremy Hunt says the issue is still on the table;
“They would be prepared to look at a deal that meant we didn’t need a backstop…
What they’re saying is…we don’t have a border with the Republic of Ireland – you do.
So if you have an idea, we’re prepared to look at it.”
