Scientists have created a tool to give smartphones and laptops a bat-like sense of their surroundings.

A machine-learning algorithm measures echoes and sounds to generate pictures and create a layout of their environment.

Researchers in Scotland think the technology could be used to keep buildings safe from intruders without the need for CCTV.

It could also be used to track vulnerable people in nursing homes and even monitor the rise and fall of a patient's chest.
