An announcement is due sometime this evening.

Most shops are to close when new Covid 19 restrictions are revealed later, with gyms also expected to shut while pubs and restaurants will be takeaway only.

Schools, creches and essential retail outlets will stay open under the new rules which are set to be a mix of Level 4 and Level 5.

As of this morning, Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan are at Level 4 with the rest of the country at Level 3.

However an announcement from Government revealing new restrictions is due sometime this evening.

Infectious disease specialist Sam McConkey says decisive action needs to be taken.

''Not just restrictions, but also what I would call visionary leadership, that lets everyone know that we're heading slowly but steadily to wards a problematic position'', he said.

''And also local leadership so private individuals, business owners, sports leaders take a role in helping to influence the people around them to change their behaviour.''

Yesterday, the Department of Health was notified of three further deaths and 1,283 additional cases of Covid-19.

It brings to 1,852 the total number of Covid-19 related deaths in Ireland, with a total of 49,962 confirmed cases.
