A spokesperson says he wasn’t in breach of covid restrictions.

It’s emerged Phil Hogan made a second visit to Kildare while it's been in lock-down.

The Irish Independent reports the EU Trade Commissioner stayed there the night before he went back to Brussels.

A spokesperson says it wasn’t in breach of covid restrictions as he was in Kildare to collect his belongings from his apartment.

But Midlands–North-West MEP Luke Ming Flanagan says the whole golfgate scandal has damaged Phil Hogan’s standing in Brexit talks.

''He's about to embark with a negotiation with the UK over Brexit'', he said.

''I would say as things stand, in fact before this happened he wasn't very much liked by the UK or any of the officials there.

''Now, he's even more of an open target for them''.

Hogan's actions don't warrant dismissal, says Brussels journalist.

One Brussels-based journalist believes the actions of Phil Hogan do not meet the bar that would make resigning necessary.

Dave Keating believes the issue is minor compared to previous controversies involving European Commissioners.

''The last incident of a commissioner resigning was John Dalli from Malta and that was after allegations from the tobacco industry and you can't get more serious than that'', he said.

''So this really pales in comparison''.
