Gardaí are urging motorists to reduce their speed after eight people lost their lives over the June Bank Holiday weekend.

Seventy eight people have died on the nation’s roads so far this year.

Assistant Commissioner for Roads Policing, Paula Hilman, says the basics, such as reducing speed, can make a difference when it comes to lowering the number of road deaths:

“There would be separate investigations ongoing with those collisions over the weekend and officers supporting families, but what I’m talking about today are general road safety messages, about speeding and ‘slow down.’

“We know that a 5 per cent decrease in speed can result in a 30 per cent decrease in fatal collisions.”
