Get an accountant into your life ASAP.

There's a perception surrounding accountants that we'd like to change once and for all.

Often they're portrayed as stuffy, suit wearing, by the book, boring individuals without a funny bone in their body.

And this portrayal is wrong, painfully wrong.

Befriending an accountant is one of the smartest things you'll ever do, and here's why:

You can go and visit them just about anywhere around the world.

Accountancy is a global language, and because of that they're able to land jobs in countries all over the globe. Take the RSM network for example, as one of the worlds largest networks of audit, tax and consulting firms, RSM has global access to 116 countries.

The USA, UK, South America, Australia, Switzerland, Greece, Italy...

They're great problem solvers.

It's part of their job to be great problem solvers, so it's in their nature. Struggling to sort out plans for the weekend or split the bill at a restaurant?

Enter your accountant friend.

They're great listeners.

Much like the above it's part of an accountant's job to listen to problems before they can solve them.

When you're chatting to your accountant friend about an issue or dilemma, you can almost be sure they're going to hear you out.

They're able to get creative when the situation needs it.

Again this is focusing on the amazing problem solving ability of accountants (which is one of the best assets a person can have).

Sometimes when a case is particularly tricky an accountant will be forced to think outside of the box to solve it.

Having a creative thinker in your squad is always a bonus.

They're up to date – finger on the pulse.

Being up to date with the latest developments around the globe is paramount to an accountant's job.

They have to know exactly what rules and regulations are in place in order to get the best results for their clients.

So if you ever have any questions about the financial state of affairs in the country and tax law changes, you know who to turn to.

If you're lucky enough to already have an accountant friend in your life, congratulations to you, never let them go!

But if you're distinctly lacking in the accountant friend department, we might have a solution for you.

Become one yourself.

And with the RSM graduate recruitment programme currently taking applications until the 21st of October, now is the time to start your journey to accountancy.

RSM Graduate Programme.

As a mid-size firm, RSM allows its graduates to get involved in a meaningful way in business development – interacting with partners and clients and experiencing all the specialisms.

At RSM, you will have the flexibility to develop a career that matches your strengths and ambitions, and you certainly won’t become pigeon-holed early in your career.

RSM even managed to win themselves ‘Practice of the Year 2018’ & ‘Advisory Team of the Year 2019’ at the Irish Accountancy Awards, so despite their size they're definitely big time players in the accountancy game.

And there are four different avenues available to students:

Audit: RSM’s Audit programme teaches graduates how to manage clients and minimise risk by identifying threats and potential improvements to systems and processes. And as mentioned earlier, as one of the world’s largest networks of audit, tax and consulting firms, RSM gives graduates access to a global network spanning more than 116 countries. So not only is being adept at auditing a great professional skill, it could also land you a job almost anywhere in the world.

Tax: In Tax, you’ll work with a range of exciting clients, aiming to become their trusted adviser. You may even get the chance to travel and take your skills abroad with RSM’s international cross border assignments learning about tax structures in partnership with other member firms.

Management Consulting: In Management Consulting, you’ll work with clients to help them drive productivity and growth through harnessing their people and their technology, enabling change and developing strategies – an exciting, ever-changing environment!

Transaction Advisory Services: As a Transaction Advisory Services professional, you’ll work with a range of organisations, fast-growing companies and private equity firms to identify growth opportunities and build strategies to realise value for the shareholders… never a dull moment.

If you want to apply for the programme, you can do that here.
