Sad songs are more likely to reach No 1

It seems 2017 was the year of the sombre song.

Celebrity and music website Popbitch analysed last year's chart-toppers and found the majority were sad and slow.

It looked at the number of beats per minute plus whether a song was performed in major or minor keys.

It found the majority of 2017's popular tracks (87%) were performed in minor keys, including Havana by Camila Cabello, Post Malone's Rock Star, Sam Smith's Too Good At Goodbyes and Ed Sheeran's Shape of You.

This figure compares with 62 per cent in 2016.

It also found 2017's songs were slower than previous years.
