Irish consumers have been spending more on home fitness products, gaming and streaming services during the Covid-19 outbreak.

Bank of Ireland has analysed debit card transactions and has found people are forking out 37 per cent more on groceries. There has also been a jump of more than a quarter on streaming services and a rise of 122 per cent on Playstation spend.

However spending on air travel, passenger travel and accommodation has dropped by more than 80 per cent.

John O'Beirne, who is Director of Products at Bank of Ireland, says the data track debit card spend in March after the schools closed.

"Covid-19 has changed our lives immensely, impacting health, social interaction, travel and also affecting the livelihoods of many.

"Shoppers are responding to the new normal, adapting behaviour and spend to their personal circumstances."

He highlighted how spending habits are reflecting less travel and more ways of keeping ourselves and our families engaged, while also prioritising home exercise and entertainment.
