More than 170 people tried to surrender their dogs in the five weeks after Christmas.
Dogs Trust received an average of four requests every day from people looking to give up their pets following Christmas.
From December 26th to the 31st of January the charity received 89 phone calls and 83 emails from concerned new dog owners.
For the second year running, the most common reason provided was the person being unable to manage the animal's behaviour.
These are real calls we’ve received during the pandemic, from people facing the heart-breaking decision to give up their dog. We expect to receive more calls like these as the fallout from Covid-19 continues.
