An Bóthar go Sangam - Girl Guides Fundraising for India

This week Brian and Kayte spoke to Aine who is a Senior Branch Member  of the Girl Guides and part of the group who visited the Sangam World Guide Centre in Pune, India as part of the
celebrations of 100 years of Senior Branch Guiding. While there,  the Girl Guides volunteered with local organisations in community based projects  for the poor and marginalised and which provide food, clothing, education,  training and support for these forgotten people.

They  saw at first hand the challenges they face on a daily basis but also how much they can achieve through their own resourcefulness, energy and creativity with just a little support.

Aine explained how When they saw the scale of the human tragedy unfolding before our eyes in India they thought of the wonderful people we met and decided we just had to do something to help. From there they set up a virtual walk from Ireland  to Sangam – a distance of 7,952 km or 12.5 million steps
.
We hope to raise €12,500  and every ten euro you contribute will bring us
ten thousand steps nearer our goal.

Orlagh From "Girls Who Dare" Tells iRadio in the Morning About The Challenge of a Lifetime

Three women, known as “Girls Who Dare” are taking on the challenge of a lifetime when they race from San Francisco to Hawaii in a 24 foot rowing boat. They are the only female crew taking part in the Great Pacific Race in June 2021, and are aiming to break the current women’s world record of 62 days, 18 hours, 36 minutes.

One of those crew members - Orlagh Dempsey spoke to Kayte and Brian about the upcoming challenge which Orlagh said she is very excited to take on. With a distance of 2400 nautical miles, the Great Pacific Race is one of the toughest races on earth. Teams made up of 3 or 4 crew all competing in identical boats, will be entirely self-supported and unassisted from the start gun in San Francisco until the finishing line in Hawaii.  Girls Who Dare will be challenged physically, mentally and emotionally by the greatest force on earth, the ocean. They will be rowing 2 hours on and 2 hours off for 24 hours a day, eating dehydrated rations, battling extreme weather and up to 50 foot swells. They will be pushed to breaking point by sleep deprivation, physical and mental fatigue, salt sores, seasickness and weight loss. They will run the risk of encounters with sharks and other wildlife, as well as large ships.

The team, who didn’t know each other before this challenge, are brought together by their shared belief that anything is possible if you dream, dare, do. (Orlagh/Jane/Vicki) said, “We want to be a relatable example to others, especially young people, that they can dream big, dare to believe in those dreams, and do whatever it takes to make those dreams a reality. We all face challenges in life and it’s knowing how to keep going when times are tough and everything seems overwhelming that makes achieving big goals possible.”
