Great news for fans of The Fresh Prince! The 90s sitcom which starred Will Smith has been given the green light to be remade as a gritty drama thanks to a four-minute mock trailer which went viral a year ago.

According to the 2019 mock film trailer's description : Ever wonder what The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air might look like if it suddenly returned to the airwaves in 2019? Well, given Hollywood’s current penchant for giving everything a “dark” and “gritty” backstory, it would probably look quite a bit like this superbly made fan film by director Morgan Cooper. Simply titled Bel-Air, it gives Will Smith’s young “Will” a considerably more dire origin story while keeping all of the major Fresh Prince beats intact.

Will Smith responded to the trailer last year calling it brilliant and is teaming up with the creator of the trailer to turn it into a gritty drama. It is reportedly going to be a co-production between Smith's Westbrook Studios and the original producers Universal TV. According to online reports this drama will explore what it's like to be a black man living in America today which given the timing of the BLM movement means there is a lot of buzz about this tv drama with several major streaming services said to be engaged in a bidding war to secure the streaming rights.
