Athenry is holding a 'Digital Parade' this St Patrick's Day.

It's one of several parades across the country who've been forced to halt proceedings this year because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

However, instead of letting months of hard work on floats go to waste, the community in Athenry decided to create a digital version of the traditional St Patrick's Day parade.

Máire Daly is the chairperson of Gliondar, Athenry Community Arts Group and came up with the solution:

“If the audience can’t gather to see us, let us reach out digitally to our audience. If the people can’t come to the Parade, let’s take the Parade to the people”

She's encouraging anyone who may be staying at home over the weekend to get involved and come up with their own ideas for floats.

She added that:

“Maybe do it in the driveway, film your band practice, choirs, cats, dogs, comedy, political, drive-by floats - anything at all! Your imagination is the limit ... but it has to be family friendly."

"You don’t have to be from Athenry, and we look forward to seeing if our friends around the country and beyond, will rise to the occasion".

Anyone who has an idea for a float is encouraged to video it and post it to their Facebook page on St Patrick's Day. If you'd like to be eligible to win one of the prizes on offer, you must submit your float before 6pm on Tuesday 17th March.
