Dr. Tony Holohan says we should know later this week when the surge of cases will arrive.

A formal recommendation on whether or not travel restrictions will continue beyond this Sunday isn't expected until Friday, it's been revealed.

Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Tony Holohan, believes we should know later this week when the predicted surge of cases will arrive.

He explained that over the course of the current week, it'll become clear whether or not the tough restrictions placed on public movement have had the desired effect in slowing the spread of the virus.

''As we get towards the end of this week we'll see what the full impact of those (the travel restrictions) is'', he said.

''And it'll be much easier at that point to say we think we will hit a peak at a certain point from now, and to have some sort of assessment to how big that peak might be.''

Hopeful signs.

Meanwhile an official from the World Health Organisation, Dr Margaret Harris, says there are hopeful signs that a number of European countries are flattening the coronavirus curve.

But Dr Harris says countries have to be careful when lifting restrictions.

She explained that lifting restrictions ''gently, slowly, carefully is absolutely crucial.''

And added,''there is no guarantee that the virus is not still going to return to any communities, especially since we're all so globally connected''.
