Children are being put at risk due to Facebook's inaction in dealing with misinformation around vaccinations.

That's the view of Fine Gael TD, Kate O'Connell, who's calling on the social network to step up its fight in tackling anti-vaccination 'propaganda' on its site.

The Health Minister is supporting her calls, with Simon Harris saying that vaccinations save lives.

The calls come in the wake of a significant upsurge of measles and mumps in Ireland. The latest figures show that cases of measles in Ireland  increased last year by almost 250 percent, while cases of mumps have also gone up by 540 percent this year compared to last.

Both have vaccines that are available, and Deputy O'Connell says Facebook urgently needs to address the issue as children's lives are being put at risk.
