Hay fever season is now starting earlier and lasting for longer, due to climate change.

Changes to weather are also responsible for a more intense pollen allergy season here, according to pharmacists.

More than a million people suffer with hay fever in Ireland - one in five are children.

Monaghan-based GP, Illona Duffy says more and more people are going to their doctor with hay fever symptoms.

She said: "GPs would report that not only are they seeing more people presented with hay fever but there have more sever symptoms.

"The hay fever season definitely seems to be extended meaning we're seeing patients present earlier in the spring and later in the autumn."
