A new HIQA report has looked into the experiences of nursing home residents during Covid-19.

Almost 30 members of staff at one nursing home tested positive for Covid-19 during the pandemic.

A report by the health watchdog on nursing home care, recommends reform of current models of care for older people in light of the pandemic. The HIQA study found many residents were fearful, confused and angry during the crisis.

It added the fall out will be with us for a considerable period of time.

The report also found that over half (51%) of nursing homes reported at least one confirmed COVID-19 case. Meanwhile, another 9% of centres have reported a suspected case, while 40% have reported no outbreak.

The report was published today and outlines that inspectors had concerns around a 'number of nursing homes' in relation to how Coronavirus outbreaks were being managed.

It also gave a county-by-county breakdown of suspected and confirmed cases in nursing homes as of the end of June 2020:

HIQA says the first confirmed case of Coronavirus in an Irish nursing home was reported on 13th March. It also highlighted that 29 members of staff at one facility tested positive for the virus and this had knock-on effects on residents and their care.

The full report can be found on the HIQA website.
