Ireland is not ready to reduce social distancing guidelines from two metres to one metre, the Taoiseach has said.
The issue has been raised this week after many businesses said they fear they wont be able to properly operate under the two metre restrictions.
Leo Varadkar today defended the existing guidelines saying that two metres is safer than one metre if in the vicinity of a person with the virus.
“Before we can relax that rule and maybe reduce it to one metre, which I know a lot of people would like, we just need to see the virus come down a bit more. We’re not at that point yet, but I think there’s a good chance we get there, just not quite yet,” he told FM104.
He went on to say that the two metres is a guideline, not a law, that the government is asking people to adhere too.

In the same interview, he also addressed the photos which circulated social media last weekend showing him sunbathing in Dublin's Poenix Park last weekend.
Mr. Varadkar was pictured with his partner Matthew Barrett and two friends in what became a huge talking point on Twitter at the start of this week.
Some people believed it was somehow irresponsible of him to go outside, despite not leaving a 5km radius and only being in a group of four, as per government guidelines.
He said that there will be no repeat picnic in the park this weekend as he doesn't "want to give my press officer a heart attack or anything."
He said: "Unfortunately there are camera phones anywhere there are people these days but that's the way it is.
"You have to live your life. And if you're afraid of photographs you'd never go out."
