It's time for a permanent tribute to the world champion?

A statue honouring the achievements of Katie Taylor could be erected in her home town.

The Bray boxer reached new heights on Saturday, as she became the undisputed lightweight champion of the world on Saturday night, beating Delfine Persoon at New York's Madison Square Gardens.

It's the highlight of Taylor's career, which has also seen her claim Olympic Gold in 2012.

Joe Behan is the Wicklow County Councillor proposing the statue;

"That proposal really came from people in Bray and the Bray Open Forum and basically people in the area who wanted something permanent to mark her many achievements.

When I first heard about the suggestion, I thought it was a brilliant idea.

I'll be proposing it at the first meeting of the new Wicklow County Council next Friday."

But Councillor Behan insists they'd talk to the world champion before making any decisions;

"Obviously, I would be anxious to ensure that Katie herself was consulted on anything like this.

I wouldn't want to be suggesting some that wasn't exactly what she would want herself.

Because she's so unassuming and reserved, it's not something I think we should do without consulting with her.

But, if she was in agreement with it, I think it's something that we should do, to have a lasting memorial of her..."
