Those travelling abroad in the coming months are urged to be safe and look out for others.

The 'Be Summer Ready' campaign has launched today, with the message this year to "Travel Wise".

Last year, the Department of Foreign Affairs provided consular assistance in over 1,700 cases, involving citizens of all ages.

Tánaiste and Foreign Affairs Minister, Micheál Martin says they've come across a wide spectrum of incidents.

"Traumatic cases come across and I want to pay tribute to the staff at the Foreign Affairs office that deal with these cases.

"Many of them are young themselves and they've had to come face to face with very sad and traumatic situations. From death to sexual assault.

"We're trying to reduce that and create an awareness around that."
