Shane Ross has admitted deliberately trying to steal some of the limelight at Katie Taylor's homecoming last year.

She arrived home at Dublin Airport in June after being crowned the undisputed lightweight champion.

The infamous photo of the Transport Minister lurking in the background went viral. Quickly after the event, memes of him in the background of other significant events soon appeared - like the moon landing and the birth of Jesus.

Reflecting on his time in government after losing his seat in the election, Shane Ross says he knew exactly what he was doing:

"It wasn't as bad as it was painted, things never are" he said.

"I was out there to greet her and to make a speech. She kept moving around towards the microphones and I kept moving behind her. I was of course aware the cameras were on me but I actually wanted to make the speech and go."

"Let there be no doubt, I knew the cameras were there and ... I wanted to be in the camera shots with Katie Taylor"
