Storm Ciara wants to have a say in the election.

The weekend is looking like it'll be a wild one, as Storm Ciara tracks over Ireland bringing heavy rain and gale force winds.

Those heading to the polls to vote in the general election on Saturday might want to get their vote out done in the morning, with the weather set to deteriorate later in the day.

Today (Thursday) will be mainly dry with early frost, mist and fog clearing this morning. Top temperatures will range from six to 10 degrees.

Friday will see Storm Ciara begin in earnest with bad weather from early on.

''Friday will be a cloudy and blustery day'', Met Eireann advised.

''It will be mainly dry at first with just scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle during the morning.

''A spell of more persistent and at times heavy rain will move into the south and west in the afternoon, becoming widespread in the evening. Afternoon temperatures of nine to 11 in fresh to strong and gusty south to southeast winds with gales along some coasts''.

The rain will clear overnight, making way for a dry Saturday morning.

However, Storm Ciara will kick off during the day as people begin to head to the polls.

A Met Eireann spokesperson said: ''Heavy rain and strong and gusty southerly winds will move eastwards over the country bringing a risk of very strong squally winds, with gales along all coasts and strong gale force winds along the northwest coast.

''The rain possibly lingering into the evening in parts of Leinster and Munster. Cold and largely dry for a time on Saturday night with lows of 2 to 6 degrees.

''However, another spell of rain and strengthening south to southwest winds will arrive into western areas before morning''.

Early indications suggest that Sunday will be another bad day with ''very strong to near gale force winds''.

Rain will clear as the day goes on but there is also a risk for hail and thunder.
