"It's not exactly what you expect to see in your downstairs loo."

A man in the UK got the shock of his life when he discovered a huge snake in his toilet.

Sky News reports that the man found the 1.2m reptile while his home in Basildon, Essex was being renovated.

The rat snake, which isn't venomous, had turned slightly blue from cleaning products used in the loo.

The man's partner told the broadcaster:

"He saw the snake, which hissed at him, then backed away into the toilet. He ran upstairs in a moment of panic - neither of us are the biggest fans of snakes, and it's not exactly what you expect to see in your downstairs loo.

"We haven't had any heating until recently so it must have been really cold for him. We haven't been staying here during the renovations so I have no idea where he has been living or how long he has been here!"

The RSPCA said the snake is probably an escaped pet.

He's been named Kevin and is being monitored at a local wildlife hospital in case he consumed any chemicals from the toilet water.
