The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) is urging people to register to vote in the upcoming referendum on the Eighth Amendment.

The union has directly registered almost 27,000 new students in its nationwide drive.

It follows a statement from the National Youth Council of Ireland earlier this week that around 150,000 young people are not on the register of electorates.

President Michael Kerrigan said thousands have yet to register before the May 8th deadline:

"Students can go onto www.checktheregister.ie and see if they are registered to vote. All students have to do is fill out the RFA2 forms found on www.checktheregister.ie, get your local Garda to stamp the form, and post the form to your local County Council."

"Forms must be sent off before Friday because of the Bank Holiday Monday, otherwise, you will have to physically drop your form in."
