‘I want to be an astronaut and work for ye but you need to fix this problem for me’

Remember back in 2006 when NASA declared that Pluto no longer the Solar System's Ninth Planet?

We've had 12-years now to accept the decision, but it still doesn't sit right... Pluto was everyone's favourite right?

Despite this, the International Astronomical Union (IAU), still downgraded Pluto from a fully fledged planet, to a mere dwarf planet. Reducing the number of Planet's in the Solar System from Nine-to-Eight in the process.

Well, it seems Pluto has recently gained a new ally in it's plight! In the form of Cara Lucy O’Connor, a five-year-old student of Glasheen Girls’ School in Glasheen, Co Cork.

She recently penned a scathing letter to Nasa demanding that Pluto's status as a planet be fully reinstated! And that the decision to strip it of it's rights was 'really mean.'

Cara Lucy wrote: “I listened to a few songs about Pluto, and in one of the videos people were dressed as different planets, and Pluto was put in the trash can and was scared by planet Earth. This was really mean because no one or no planet or dwarf planets should be put in the trash can.”

Not cool!

She also added her intentions to become an Astronaut one day, but first they had to fix this little issue... “I would like to become an astronaut and work for ye but you need to fix this problem for me.” Your move Nasa!

Unfortunately for Cara Lucy, the decision to reinstate Pluto as a planet is out of Nasa's Hands...

However she did get a reply! From Dr Carly Howett, a senior scientist on the New Horizons spacecraft. Who said it was great for young people, “especially girls,” to be interested in the planets.

Before going on to express her views on the whole Pluto problem...

“I think Pluto is very important, but Pluto probably doesn’t care what silly people on the Earth call it. So I just call it my favourite world and let other people argue about it.”

So that's basically the polite adult way of saying 'it ain't gonna happen sorry.'

But don't give up though Cara Lucy! We admire you're tenacity... and if you believe Pluto should be a Planet... then so do we!
