You're not the only one.

1 in 5 Irish people give their car a nickname, with women more likely to do it than men.

The survey of over 1,000 motorists by DoneDeal.ie showed Irish people aged between 25 and 35 are most likely to name their car.

But what are the most common names?

The top three are as follows:

  1. Betsy
  2. Bessie
  3. Mary

Mary the Car. A solid choice.

The tradition is most popular with 18-34 year olds as 23% of them admitted to naming their car.

That age group are twice as likely to give their car a name than those aged over 35, where just 12% do it.

The study also found that most male car owners (51%) believe their car is female but the ladies are 11% more likely to actually christen their motor.

"These findings are pure fun but they also offer an insight into the emotional relationship the younger generation develops with their cars", Martin Clancy from DoneDeal told Extra.ie.

"Men are more likely to attribute a female gender to their cars while women are the most likely to give the car a nickname."

"The research also uncovered that 60% of men under 25 attribute a female gender to their car."
