Gardaí have launched an internal inquiry after officers 'cancelled' thousands of calls reported to the 999 emergency service.
The cancellations were made by staff at regional control centres, and included reports from people about suspicious behaviour and public order offences.
The scoping exercise has been ordered to find out the extent of the problem and what action might be needed.
It's expected the inquiry will conclude early in the new year.
