A new pilot scheme to give artists and arts workers a basic income opens for applications today.

The government's online portal goes live at 1pm for a four week period.

2,000 applicants will then be chosen at random, and paid 325 euro per week for three years under the scheme.

Chairperson of the National Campaign for the Arts, Angela Dorgan, is encouraging everyone in the industry to apply:

"Anybody can get selected, it's non-competitive, so once you're eligible and the selection happens I think it's as important that everyone makes their number known now, so that we and others like us can go back to all government parties and look for the next phase of this to be that basic income for everyone in arts, if not a basic income for all.
