17 year-old Keane Mulready Woods was abducted and killed in January and parts of his body dumped in two locations in north Dublin.
The man shot in Belfast is thought to be a Dublin-based criminal who had been warned that his life was in danger.
He was gunned down outside a house on Etna Drive in the north of the city just before midday on Saturday.
He was shot a number of times at close range and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A light coloured car, with the registration number YLZ 7052, was found burned out in nearby Kingston Court.
Detectives are also appealing for information about a dark coloured car seen in Ardoyne Avenue minutes after the car had been set on fire.
