Non-EU bus drivers could be allowed work in Ireland for the first time in an effort to tackle the recruitment crisis.

The Irish Times reports the Department of Transport is in talks to secure work permits for those with 'critical skills.'

Dublin Bus and Go-Ahead Ireland recently apologised over issues with services - including so-called 'ghost buses' on real time trackers.

Both technical problems and a shortage of drivers were blamed - there's almost 200 vacancies across both companies combined.

It's not the only industry experiencing a shortage, with huge concerns over taxi availability in the run up to the busy Christmas period.

Vinny Kearns CEO of NXT Taxis says people should not have to wait 11 months for a test to become a taxi driver.

“In the UK, you can become a taxi driver within a month. In Ireland it can take anything up to and I’ve seen cases where it takes 10, 11, 12 months.”
