A wide reaching 'bazooka' measure has been ruled out.

The Tanaiste says the coalition leaders will meet next week to discuss further action on the cost of living crisis.

Charities are warning some people are close to losing their homes as they can't afford to pay the bills.

It's not just the cost of energy going up - the weekly food shop is also getting more expensive.

The latest CSO figures show pasta is up 10 per cent over the last year, milk by 8 per cent and chicken by 7 per cent.

Mike Allen from Focus Ireland says it all comes on top of spiraling rents:

"All those factors are putting pressure on people and one of the things that can give on a day-to-day basis is the ability to pay the rent. Ultimately that means people are facing the prospect of losing their home as a result of these rising costs."

The charity is calling on the government to move more rapidly to help those struggling the most.

The leaders of the three coalition parties will meet on Monday to consider further measures.

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar says they'll offset the upcoming carbon tax increase - but there's a limit to what can be done:

"There's not going to be another big bazooka measure, we're not in that position at the moment. We don't want to get into the situation whereby we're borrowing money to help people reduce their bills, because ultimately in the long run that's just a con."

Ministers are stressing they do want to help ease the financial pressure on households - but won't be introducing measures every week to address rising costs.
