Tánaiste Micheál Martin has signalled he'd support the decriminalisation of drugs in Ireland.
The move could potentially see recreational users get their drug of choice in an off-licence style premises.
According to the Examiner both the Tánaiste and Taoiseach have said a citizens assembly will be set up to discuss the matter this year.
Fianna Fáil TD Paul McCauliffe is among those to call for a more 'health-led approach' and says illegal drug addiction needs to be treated in the same way as alcoholism:
"We have legal and we have illegal drugs in Ireland and we have a very hypocritical approach about how we treat both of them and how we treat people who are addicted to both of them differently.
"If you have an illness, and addiction is an illness, you don't need a solicitor or a guard. You need a doctor, a nurse, a councillor."
"We believe a health-led approach would decriminalise the person".
