The DAA says plans to charge people for collections and drop-off's at Dublin airport is aimed at encouraging more passengers to use public transport.

Construction will get underway in the second half of this year after Fingal County Council granted permission for new paid zones, meaning they won't be in place for the busy summer season.

A free collection and drop-zone will be provided in the red long-term carpark, while there will be special provisions for those with reduced mobility.

The Independent reports that an airport spokesperson said:

"As part of our ‘sustainability’ agenda, the new system aims to reduce car journeys to and from the airport and to encourage passengers to make greater use of public transport."

Travel journalist Eoghan Corry says that Dublin should have better public transport options available for passengers:

"We're charging from drop off for sustainability, but there isn't the same public transport option in Dublin. It's a bit of a shock for anyone coming from mainland Europe to arrive in Dublin and find the facilities they take for granted are not available"
