The EU is planning to ban all non-essential travel to Europe for the next 30 days.

The border closure will cover thirty countries. Essential staff and people transporting goods would be exempt from the ban.

Metro.co.uk report that EU chief Ursula Von Der Leyen proposed the 30 day ban part of a joint battle against the coronavirus pandemic.

The President of the European Commission also added that it could be prolonged if necessary:

"The less travel, the more we can contain the virus. Therefore … I propose to the heads of state and government to introduce temporary restriction on non-essential travel to the EU," she said at a press conference today.

She added:

"These travel restrictions should be in place for an initial period of 30 days, but can be prolonged as necessary".
