Minister Humphreys announces extra financial support for businesses hit by Covid-19

The total amount of support now stands at €1 billion.

Business Minister Heather Humphreys has announced extra supports for businesses hit by the Coronavirus.

The additional support comes in the form of a €450m expansion of two loan schemes operated by the Strategic Banking Corporation of Ireland (SBCI).

While the Working Capital Loan Scheme, which provides liquidity support to businesses, will receive a further €250m, bringing the total fund to €450m.

There will also be smaller loans to help retailers develop their online presence to keep trading.

Ms Humphreys explained that it brings the total pot of supports for Irish businesses to €1 billion.

''There are three stages that we need to support businesses through'', she said.

''First of all the initial shock, stabilization and then the reboot stage.

''Today's announcement is another important step in our evolving response to the unprecedented challenge that covid-19 represents to businesses.''
