Proposals will be presented to cabinet this week to cut the level of welfare supports given to asylum seekers and Ukrainian refugees.

Writing in the Sunday Independent, Taoiseach Simon Harris said he wants to ensure Ireland adopts a firmer migration system.

A memo, looking to adjust payments for international protection applicants and Ukrainian refugees, is set to go before Cabinet tomorrow.

However, the Social Democrats' Spokesperson for Social Protection, Gary Gannon, thinks it could promote dangerous misinformation:

'If welfare entitlements are higher here, only moderately than they are in other places like France or Germany for example, it also has to be taken into consideration the cost of living or the price of accommodation or rent is equally as high so this is just the Government once again operating on chaos and kind of stirring the pot of misinformation.'
