However, A&E fees are unlikely to be dropped.

Hospital inpatient and outpatient fees are set to be scrapped next year.

Writing in today's Irish Independent, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly says it's something his Department's "actively exploring...subject to funding" .

The €80-a-day fee for people without a medical card or private health insurance to stay in hospital or have a day-case procedure is among the charges to be cut.

However, the €100 charge at emergency departments would remain.

The Irish Independent reports that it could lead to a patient being saved €400 while in a ward.

That's based on an average length of hospital stay of around five days.

When asked when the fees will be dropped, Minister Donnelly said the hope is to do it in 2023.

Mr Donnelly told the paper "For far too long access to care and health outcomes have been adversely impacted by ability to pay."

He continued," I believe that health services should be affordable, or fere at the point of delivery."

He also said the number of people on waiting lists would be reduced to its lowest in "five years".

It was recently found that a total of 877,000 people are on a hospital list waiting for care.

With 234,000 of those having been on a list for more than a year.
