International Travel resumes from the 19th of July.

The Tanaiste says it's "unfair" to tell families and young people they can't holiday overseas without being fully vaccinated.

International travel is set to resume on the 19th of July, when the EU Digital Green Cert is introduced.

But earlier this week, the Chief Medical Officer urged people not to travel abroad unless they've gotten their jabs.

Dr Tony Holohan warned that if unvaccinated people travel, it’s possible they’ll bring back variants of concern.

It comes amid concerns over the Delta variant of Covid and its spread in Ireland.

The chief medical officers in the Republic and the North expressed concern over the variant.

They've been appealing to people crossing the border to exercise caution.

There have been 188 cases of the strain in Ireland so far, but it's expected that'll rise.

Leo Varadkar says the Government has to take fairness into account, particularly for people at the back of the vaccine queue.

"What Tony Holohan is saying is entirely understandable from a public health point of view and a scientific point of view," Varadkar said.

"But we think it'd be unfair to families and to younger people, who haven't had the opportunity to get vaccinated yet because we haven't had the supply, to say they can't travel abroad," he added.

He added that the requirement of the PCR test is there to allow those unvaccinated to travel.
