It could be months before some prescription medication will be back on chemists' shelves

Ireland's medicine shortage is set to get worse as pharmacists have been warned it could be months before some prescription medication will be back on chemists' shelves.

The Irish Mail on Sunday reports that Dr Una Fallon, a public health specialist in the Midlands, sent a memo to health professionals.

In the memo, Dr Fallon stated some vital medicines will not be available to patients for the foreseeable future.

Dr Fallon warned there is 'no expected date of resupply' for one form of penicillin, which is used to treat lung infections and tonsillitis.

Last week, we were warned that if we required medicines we should contact our pharmacies before purchasing anti-biotics.

Pharmacies reported a shortage of cough medicines and cold remedies.

It comes as there's an increase of people suffering from respiratory ilnesses such as Covid, RSV and flu.
