The courts are owed €18 million in unpaid fines from the past 18 months.

Over 84,000 court fines were issued in the same period.

The data shows just over 2,000 cases remain either under appeal or have gone to a judicial review.

The Courts Service says €16,000 has been deemed "uncollectible" due to death or other considerations.

According to the data, the highest collection rate of 59 percent was recorded in Ballina, Co Mayo, for 2021.

Sinn Féin's justice spokesman, Martin Kenny, says reform is needed.

"I understand that in different areas of the country there are different degrees in which the court services are successful at collecting the fines, while other areas are less successful.

"I think there needs to be reform of this. I think we also need to understand that in many cases there are charges put against people's property, or against people's income."
