Local authorities across the country are to be given funding to set up new 'Town Teams' or to build up existing ones.

The funding was announced today at the launch of the second phase of the ‘Town Centre First' plan.

It aims to boost employment and tourism and encourage people to live and work there.

Junior Minister Kieran O'Donnell said the Government is trying to tackle rural vacancy and dereliction.

"This is about rural Ireland, rural towns and villages showing that they want people to come and live in those areas".
