Robert Troy says the number of errors he made in relation to declarations on his property investments led to his decision to resign.

The Junior Minister stepped down last night after weeks of drip-feeding information that he had failed to declare his interest in a number of rental properties to the Standards in Public Office Commission.

In his resignation statement, the Fianna Fail TD also says he won't apologise for being a landlord, and that vilifying landlords is not the answer.

Social Democrats co-leader Roisin Shortall says it's a surprise Taoiseach Micheal Martin stood by him as long as he did.

'It raises huge questions about the credibility of the Government, in terms of compliance and abiding by the rules and so on, if poor standards like we've seen in recent days  if they were thought to be acceptable to the Taoiseach and up to yesterday the Taoiseach was standing by his Minister now ya know that is very bad for the credibility of politics generally.'
