Incoming first-year students to third-level colleges could potentially face delays again next year.

It comes as the releasing of the Leaving Cert results is expected to be delayed for a fourth year in a row.

According to the Independent, the grades won't be ready by the traditional date in mid-August.

However, they won't be as late as they have been in recent years.

Since the pandemic results haven't been ready until the first week of September.

It's meant that incoming first year students to third level colleges have had to have a late start and the delay has even led to some Irish students missing out on a college place in another EU country or in the UK.

Labours spokesman on Education Aodhán Ó Ríordáin says a radical overall of the Leaving Cert is needed:

"It's not good enough, clearly the young people are not at the centre of what the Department of Education are thinking about this.

"The State Examination Commission and the department really need to do better.

We've had an ongoing saga with the Leaving cert for a number of years that really needs to come to a halt."
