Predictive grades are back on the table.
Leaving Cert students could still be subjected to a predicted grade, if the state exams cannot be held.
The Department of Education wants to hold the Leaving Cert at the end of July, but this will only be possible if public health officials feel it can be done safely.
A department spokesperson says a number of back-up options are being considered, but predicted grades are the front-runner.
Children's Rights Alliance chief executive, Tanya Ward, feels students should be given the choice of both scenarios.
''We know from young people themselves that the stress of not knowing is causing a huge burden on them,'' she said.
''I think they need to give young people an option, to either sit the leaving cert or to proceed through predictive grading.
''Because some young people are likely to benefit from doing the exams and other are likely to benefit from the predicted grading system''.
The ultimate decision is expected to be announced within a week.
