A TD has warned another lockdown could be on the cards if the Government goes ahead with the re-opening of indoor dining.
Ministers are expected to approve the move at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
Donegal GP Dr Denis McCauley is among those warning high Covid levels in that county could spread to the rest of Ireland if caution isn't observed.
The town of Buncrana last week recorded an incidence rate that's seven times the national average.
More than 3,700 cases have been reported nationally since Friday, in the week the Government is due to approve the re-opening of indoor dining.
People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy thinks in the current climate it's an extremely bad idea:
"If restaurants go and open up, they'll increase that further. There'll be an impact in terms of long Covid. If they do reopen indoor hospitality it makes it very likely that we'll have another lockdown."
But Minister of State Thomas Byrne disagrees:
"I don't think there's a recklessness about the Government position at all. I think the criticism Government is getting regarding indoor dining was caution. I think caution has been well advised by NPHET".
Several sources in Government said this morning the planned re-opening of indoor dining next week is still set to go ahead.
