Until now, it had been regarded as a safe haven for people fleeing the fighting further East.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin has responded to comments by Joe Biden which declared Vladimir Putin "cannot remain in power", saying it's not up to him.

Speaking in Poland, the US President directly addressed the Russian people, drawing comparisons with World War Two.

British intelligence says Russian forces appear to be attempting to "encircle" Ukrainian troops in the East.

A Dublin MEP thinks the EU needs to take more sanctions against Russia over the war in Ukraine.

Frances Fitzgerald is describing the situation as 'shocking' and says it's extremely difficult to get humanitarian aid through to those most in need.

"I think every day we need more sanctions, everything possible. More numbers of people included in the sanctions, relevant people," Fitzgerald said.

"We need sanctions in relation to all aspects of the Russian economy because what we're seeing is outrageous," Fitzgerald added.

Meanwhile, there are calls for the process of accrediting the qualifications of Ukrainian refugees arriving here to be accelerated.

Fine Gael Senator from Co. Clare, Martin Conway, has said it's important those with important skills can use them quickly.
