It comes just days before Budget 2023

A major protest is taking place in Dublin City this afternoon calling for price controls on energy and rent.

The ‘Cost of Living Coalition’ of over 30 organisations and political parties will march from Parnell Square at 2.30 pm.

It comes just days before Budget 2023, with Ministers promising significant relief, particularly with energy costs.

The Cost of Living Coalition also wants to put the Government under pressure to act in this budget to tackle the housing situation.

People Before Profit TD Richard Boyd Barrett says people can't afford the rising costs:

"Huge numbers of people are blighted by the cost of rent and a housing crisis.

He added that we need people on the streets to put maximum pressure on the government:

"All the costs of living are rising while people's incomes are being slashed by the impact of inflation and we're saying the government have to act in this budget and we think we need 1000s and 1000s of people out on the street today to put maximum pressure on this government."

This demonstration comes soon after a similar protest in Cork, which had an attendance of about 5,000.

Local TD Mick Barry is calling on the public to travel to Dublin to take part in today’s event:

"This is people's chance. The energy providers have had their say, the landlords have had their say, this is the chance for ordinary people to have their say on the streets."
