North Korea has announced its first coronavirus infections more than two years into the pandemic.

State media says the Omicron strain has been found, with the outbreak being described as a "grave national emergency".

The country's leader Kim Jong-un has called for Covid measures to be raised to maximum levels.

The preventative measures include a full lockdown of all cities in North Korea, an indicator of how serious the outbreak is.

Meanwhile, there have been quite a few raised eyebrows at the suggestion that the country hadn't had any confirmed cases of Covid-19 over the past two to three years, particularly given how hard neighbouring countries South Korea and China were hit during the pandemic.

It's reported the North Korean population have not been vaccinated.
